Electives

The expansion of English-language electives is a response to the need for places for international students in English-language courses. In the future it will also be possible to offer these electives as modules in a Master's degree on Infectious Diseases.

The electives in public health are taught mainly by NIIH staff. Students from universities in low income countries with which we have intensive cooperation are invited to participate each year as follows:

  • Health & Disease in Developing Countries, a multi-disciplinary (BOWO) module, in March (5KVZ-1)
  • Public Health in an International Perspective, in April (5KVZ-2)
  • AIDS, in May (5KVZ-7)

NIIH staff also teaches in the Infection and Resistance electives:

  • Immuno-defense of micro-organisms, a multi-disciplinary (BOWO) module, in March (KIA-6)
  • Infectious Diseases control EU, in April (5KIA-7)
  • Severe Infectious diseases, in May (5KIA-8)

To facilitate the participation of international students it is essential that both tracks are offered without interruption every year, in this order. Therefore both tracks begin each year with a multi-disciplinary (BOWO) elective.

Teams of one international student and two Nijmegen students will be formed to develop a research proposal. For both tracks, the research proposal must be completed, presented and approved by the end of May.

Students who wish to enrol in one of the electives 5KVZ-1 or KVZ-2 must do this in the manner prescribed for electives. The objectives, structure and contents of these electives are described in the relevant information pamphlet on electives. Students who are preparing for the Rotation Programme for Student Doctors in low-income countries are advised to select the 5KVZ-1 and/or KVZ-2 projects as their first priority.
